Introduction

Jacksonville, Florida is a city that has something for everyone. Whether you prefer to be outdoors or indoors, Jacksonville has plenty of museums and historic sites to keep you busy for a day or two. Here are some of our favorite things to do in the area:

Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is Jacksonville’s only fine arts museum, and it’s located in Riverside. The museum opened in 1968 with a mission to “collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret art of the American South." It has since grown into a major regional institution with over 20,000 items in its collection.

The Cummer features rotating exhibits that showcase both historical and contemporary artwork by local artists as well as those from around the world. Some recent exhibitions have included works by Andy Warhol and Joan Mitchell from their collections at the Frick Collection; "A Look at Our World," an exhibition featuring objects from nearly every continent; an examination of African-American quiltmaking traditions; and an exploration of early modernism through French paintings from the 1920s to 1950s.
